Will Veneers Make Your Teeth Sensitive?

Porcelain veneers are used to improve a smile in New York City, NY. At Cosmetic Dental Studios, Dr. Victoria Veytsman offers smile makeover consultations at her Midtown Manhattan dental office to help her patients achieve their dream smile. While veneers are a great treatment option for many patients, they don’t always work for those with eroded or weakened tooth enamel. For these patients, our celebrity dentist in NYC offers minimal prep veneers, which require little to no preparation of the teeth.

What can veneers or minimal prep veneers fix?

Dr. Veytsman uses veneers to help her patients in Midtown Manhattan to fix:

  • Crowded teeth

  • Overlapping teeth

  • Broken teeth

  • Cracked teeth

  • Chipped teeth

  • Yellow or discolored teeth

  • Uneven alignment or spacing

  • Crooked teeth (as an alternative to Invisalign®)

Veneers create a straighter, whiter, and more natural-looking smile. They also protect the surface of damaged teeth and help eliminate the need for more extensive dental procedures later on.

How do veneers work?

Minimal prep veneers offer many of the same benefits as veneers. The main difference is minimal prep veneers don’t require your teeth to be filed down. This allows more of your natural teeth to be preserved. An ideal candidate for minimal prep veneers is a patient who has enough remaining tooth surface to bond them successfully. They are especially great for those with sensitive teeth.

Because there is no preparation of the teeth, patients at our Midtown Manhattan dental office spend less time in the chair. During your first visit, Dr. Veytsman will create a mold that fits your natural teeth best, and they are custom made to match the shade of your teeth. Temporaries aren’t needed with minimal prep veneers because once they’re ready, they will be placed and adjusted. Once your minimal prep veneers are bonded, there is no post-treatment tooth sensitivity, which many veneers patients experience. They also are reversible as the teeth under veneers remain strong. With proper care, this type of veneer can last up to 20 years.

Will I experience more tooth sensitivity after getting veneers?

If we have to remove a little tooth enamel with your veneers, you may feel slight sensitivity when having hot or cold foods or beverages. After getting your veneers, your gums need time to adjust, so you may experience minor inflammation or discomfort, leading to sensitivity. Ultimately, most of our patients at Cosmetic Dental Studios experience little to no tooth sensitivity after treatment.

Caring for your veneers

Veneers or minimal prep veneers won’t last forever, which makes it important to care for your teeth well from home. A regular at-home oral hygiene routine with regular brushing and flossing removes plaque and leftover food to reduce your chances of developing tooth decay or gum disease. Regular dental exams and routine dental cleanings are important as they allow Dr. V. to determine when they need to be replaced. The better you care for your teeth, the better they will look and feel.
