Can Veneers Fix an Overbite?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Victoria Rose Veytsman, DDS | Nearly Two Decades of Experience | Last Updated: October 2026

Usually no. Veneers change how your teeth look, not how your bite works, so they do not correct a true overbite. A very mild case can sometimes be camouflaged cosmetically, but a real overbite needs orthodontics or another bite treatment first, and Dr. Victoria Veytsman is candid when veneers are the wrong tool: “that is not the best use of bonding.”

Overbite, overjet, and deep bite are not the same thing

An overbite is how far your upper front teeth cover the lower ones vertically. Overjet is how far the upper teeth stick out horizontally, sometimes called buck teeth, and a deep bite is a severe vertical overlap. The right fix depends on which one you have and whether the cause is the teeth or the jaw.

When veneers can camouflage a mild bite concern

When the bite itself is healthy and stable, veneers can improve the look of small imperfections, such as slightly uneven or worn edges. This is cosmetic camouflage, and the bite stays exactly as it was. It works only when your teeth already meet properly and there is no functional problem to solve.

When you need orthodontics first

When teeth are genuinely out of position they need to move, and veneers cannot move teeth. Orthodontics like Invisalign or braces correct the bite first, and veneers can follow later only if you still want a cosmetic change. Dr. Veytsman’s approach is to lay everything out: “We always present all options to the patient and lean towards the most conservative option that will get us the best result.”

Why veneers chip or debond on an uncorrected bite

Placing veneers over an uncorrected overbite invites trouble. If your teeth hit at the wrong angle or with too much force, that pressure lands on the porcelain, which can chip, crack, or pop a veneer loose. Fixing the bite first protects the cosmetic work and helps it last.

How Dr. Veytsman decides, and when she says no

Dr. Veytsman starts from your goals and the health of your bite, then recommends the most conservative option that actually lasts. If you are happy with the size and shape of your teeth, that may mean Invisalign, bonding, or whitening rather than veneers. When veneers or bonding are the wrong tool for a bite problem, she says so plainly: “that is not the best use of bonding.”

Your options at a glance: veneers, Invisalign, braces, surgery

Here is how the common paths compare, from purely cosmetic to full bite correction:

VeneersReshape and recolor the front of teethNoCosmetic concerns once the bite is stable
InvisalignGradually moves teeth into better positionYes, mild to moderateCorrecting the bite discreetly
BracesMove teeth, including larger movementsYesModerate to complex bite issues
Jaw surgeryRepositions the jawsYesSkeletal overbite that comes from jaw structure

Common questions about veneers and overbite

Can veneers straighten crooked teeth?

Veneers can make mildly crooked teeth look straighter cosmetically, but they do not move or straighten teeth. Larger misalignment needs orthodontics.

Will veneers fix my overbite without braces?

No. If you have a true overbite, veneers will not correct it, and placing them on an uncorrected bite risks damaging the veneers. Orthodontics comes first.

Can I get veneers after braces or Invisalign?

Yes. Once your bite is corrected and stable, veneers are a common finishing step for a cosmetic change, if you still want one.

Are veneers cheaper than orthodontics for an overbite?

Price is the wrong comparison, because they do different jobs. Veneers will not fix a bite at any price, so the real question is which treatment your case actually needs, best answered at an exam.
